The Top 10 Most Popular Male Cosmetic Procedures

Why would a man want to get a cosmetic procedure? The same reasons women do, and as it turns out, they are getting more comfortable caring about their appearance.

As our culture shifts more towards social media and video conference calls, less men hesitate to go get cosmetic treatments and visit their plastic surgeon than ever before.

Men are more inclined to get minimally invasive treatments, but make up a growing number of plastic surgeries every year as well.

Many men are leaving their dad bods in the past where they belong with the help of Daddy Do-Overs, a manly twist on the Mommy Makeover. The combination of cosmetic enhancements brings with it new confidence and a younger appearance for the man under the knife.

Here are the top 10 cosmetic enhancements men gravitate towards.

1. Botulinum toxin type A

Man botox

Botulinum toxin type A such Botox®, Dysport®, or Xeomin® is the most common cosmetic procedure men get. Since the year 2000, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reports the amount of men getting injectable treatments has increased by over 400%.

These injectable treatments reduce expression-causing wrinkles by temporarily interfering with the chemical signals that cause the muscles to contract.

Men are more likely to get treatments that can be done quickly and discreetly. Botox® fits the bill as it can be done in a lunch hour and offer quick results without any down time.

2. Laser Hair Removal

Hair removal is no longer just for women. As the second most popular procedure men get, they are turning to the laser to remove hair on their chests, backs, or other problem areas.

"Most men don't necessarily want it all removed, but increasingly they do want it thinned out, on their back and chest, for example," dermatologist David Goldberg, MD told WebMD, who regularly performs laser hair removal on men.

3. Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive procedure more and more men are enjoying for clean, youthful skin.

Men aren't as conditioned as women to use skincare products and over time it shows. Years of dead skin cell build up can clog pores and create rough textures as well as cause premature aging.

Microdermabrasion is a great lunchtime facial treatment. It usually takes around 30 minutes, and has great results. It buffs away dead skin cells and cleans out pores, promoting collagen and tissue growth.

4. Soft Tissue Fillers

Hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane and Juvéderm are also popular among men. They plump deep creases and wrinkles on the face for a youthful appearance and work great for filling in deep pitted acne scars.

Fillers also work great for augmenting men's jawlines. Marina Del Ray plastic surgeon, Dr. David Stoker, explains that fillers such as Radiesse®, which is made with a synthetic calcium complex that feels a lot more like bone than your typical hyaluronic acid injectable, can create the enhanced jawline you want.

5. Chemical Peels

There has been a rise in chemical peel treatments that men use both at home  and by skincare professionals.

Men get chemical peels to lighten hyperpigmentation (dark spots) due to the sun or aging. Chemical peels also help with fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores, and mild scarring.

6. Nose Reshaping (Rhinoplasty)

Man nose job

In 2019, about 1/4 of the nose jobs done in the United States were on men, according to the ASPS

Male rhinoplasties are done for many reasons. First of all, this reconstructive nose surgery helps change the size and shape of the nose, which is beneficial for confidence if the patient isn't happy with how their nose looks.

Other than cosmetic reasons, many men with broken noses due to traumatic accidents also benefit from nose reshaping. Those with breathing problems resulting from a deviated septum will also seek rhinoplasty.

7. Blepharoplasty Eyelid Surgery

One of the most popular procedures men get is eyelid rejuvenation, or blepharoplasty. The ASPS stated, "Loose hanging furrowed skin, lateral brows that hang over the upper eyelids, and bulging fat pads below the eyelids with accentuated tear troughs put forth the image of fatigue and loss of vitality."

Blepharoplasty removes extra skin around the eye and tightens the skin and muscles, reducing wrinkles and helping men look younger.

8. Liposuction

Although not an answer for weight loss, liposuction has become popularized among men for removing excess fat deposits and helping with body contour.

Dr. Ferraro told Zwivel that men like liposuction for their flanks and abdomen. “It’s effective and pinpoints the changes they want to make,” he explains. “I find younger men tend to ask for it the most."

9. Gynaecomastia Male Breast Reduction

Male breast reduction is primarily performed for the hormonal condition Gynaecomastia, not significant weight gain. Since diet and exercise won't do much to fix the size and shape of their more feminine breasts, men with gynaecomastia turn to plastic surgeons for help.

According to Oxygenetix Advisory Board Member and plastic surgeon, Christopher Inglefield, "Male Breast development, Gynaecomastia, either true breast tissue or fat deposition, is common during puberty. However, this physiological gynaecomastia usually resolves in the majority of young men. Approximately 10% of young men have persistence of the breast development, and this can cause significant psychological problems."

10. Hair Transplantation

It may come at no surprise that hair transplantation makes the list of popular cosmetic enhancements for men. With more than 50 million men in the United States alone affected by male pattern baldness and hair loss, the hair transplant business is booming.

Doctors have been performing hair transplants since the 50's, and it has come a long way since then. Using hairs from other parts of your scalp, surgeons graft areas that are experiencing thinning. This procedure has been proving to have lasting effects for fuller, thicker hair.
