The Future of Skin Care with Dr. Jon Grazer
Technology continues to improve in the world of skincare. Mankind will always be searching for the next best thing, a way to look and feel younger, how to be more efficient. Right now there are scientists and researchers in laboratories all over the world exploring new ideas for skincare and health. We spoke with leading plastic surgeon Jon M. Grazer, MD, MPH, FACS for his observations about the world of skincare and plastic surgery. When asked what the future holds for skincare, Dr. Grazer listed, “stem cells, platelet-rich plasma, nutraceuticals, cosmeceuticals, and prevention are the latest hot topics in skincare.”
Stem Cells
The use of stem cells in facial injections is one of the ways skincare will continue to improve in the future.
Stem cells are very unique cells in the body that have the capability of transforming into other cells and replicating quickly. This makes them great healers of many diseases and can be used in cosmetic procedures such as facelifts.
The stem cells used in a facelift are usually taken through liposuction from the stomach, buttocks, or thighs. There is a higher percentage of stem cells in fat than in bone marrow. The fat is processed through centrifugation and enzymatic processing. The stem cell solution is then injected into hollows of the face, wrinkles, or unwanted lines. Unlike other injectables that need maintenance, stem cells promote collagen growth in the skin which lasts for years.
The stem cells are also known to grow new blood vessels and enhance wound recovery. In with the new, and out with the old, as the stem cells work their magic creating younger-looking skin!
This is the future, but as of now, stem cell therapy is not currently FDA approved in the United States.
Platelet Rich Plasma
Platelet-rich plasma for facial rejuvenation is becoming more popular. It is often referred to as the “Vampire Facelift” because it uses your own blood.
A small amount of the patient’s blood is taken and spun in a centrifuge to retrieve the platelets. They are then injected into problem areas of the face such as fine lines and wrinkles, or areas with undesirable texture. The platelets work within the skin gradually over time, creating natural-looking improvements.
PRP treatments can be used in conjunction with other procedures to improve tissue growth.
Nutraceuticals & Cosmeceuticals
Dr. Grazer explained, “In the future, we will be seeing less invasive procedures and more prevention with nutraceuticals and cosmeceuticals”.
Nutraceuticals are products derived from food sources that contain extra medicinal benefits preventing diseases and aging.
According to our source, “they could have a role in a plethora of biological processes, including antioxidant defenses, cell proliferation, gene expression, and safeguarding of mitochondrial integrity. Nutraceuticals may be used to improve health, prevent chronic diseases, postpone the aging process (and in turn increase life expectancy), or just support functions and integrity of the body”.
Cosmeceuticals are cosmetic products that have bioactive ingredients, with medicinal benefits. The ingredients in cosmeceuticals that are beneficial include vitamins, antioxidants, and peptides.
Prevention
As more and more people are becoming educated on what they can do in their younger years to prevent aging and health problems, there has been an increase in preventative care.
Dr. Grazer explained to us that his “oldest looking patients have the most sun damage, golfers, runners, gardeners, tennis players, equestrians and bicyclists”.
This sun damage causes wrinkles, sun spots, and premature aging of the skin as the UV rays damage the elastin in the skin and the ability to repair the DNA. The damaging of the elastin fibers causes sagging of the skin and the inability of the skin to bounce back after stretching.
“People are doing much better with the prevention,” explained Dr. Grazer. “At the beach today, babies can’t be seen underneath their hats and umbrellas, as parents have begun to understand the damaging effects of the sun. Most people get 80% of their sun exposure by the time they’re 18 years old.”
Using an SPF is important every day, especially on your face where you are exposed most often. Our Oxygenetix Oxygenating Foundation and Acne Control Foundation provide a solution as they contain UVA and UVB protection with SPF 30. These foundations are also long-lasting and water-resistant, keeping you protected throughout the day.
