Is Slugging Safe for Acne-Prone Skin?

Slugging has gained popularity in the last few years, and with colder winter weather upon us, it may be tempting to try. So what is slugging?

Slugging is a skincare term that involves slathering your entire face in a layer of vaseline or petroleum jelly. By creating a barrier on the skin overnight, your pillow won't soak up any moisture from your skin and your face won't be subject to the dry air from your heaters or AC unit. 

Is Slugging Safe for Acne?

If you have acne-prone skin, then you know how important it is to educate yourself about the effects of skincare techniques and products. Slugging is one of those viral skincare trends that is not going to be beneficial for acne. 

Acne-prone skin needs to be able to breathe. Oxygen is what helps our wounds heal, and by covering your skin with vaseline you are blocking vital airflow to your acneic skin. Dr. Yoram Harth, MD told MDAcne, "Although Petrolatum is not regarded as comedogenic, it can clog the skin pores and make acne worse. If you are acne-prone or acne-prone, it’s best to avoid petrolatum and anything that’s occlusive." 

Vaseline will block your pores, trapping in bacteria, sebum, and other debris that can cause acne. This is not ideal for skin that needs to heal.

Is Slugging Safe for Anyone?
